NOTES: Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery

Part of CIMIT's first programs in Minimal Invasive Surgery, NOTES is a novel approach to performing surgical procedures without making incisions on the surface of the body or leaving scars. NOTES utilizes flexible endoscopes through the mouth, anus or vagina to enter the abdominal, pelvic and thoracic cavities. The idea of NOTES was developed in response to the concept that patients would realize the benefits of less invasive surgery by reducing the recovery time, experience less physical discomfort associated with traditional procedures, and have virtually no scarring following this type of surgery.

By choosing NOTES in 2008, CIMIT is helping to pioneer the next generation of innovation in the area of minimally invasive surgery and is the world's single largest backer of this procedure. At its founding in 1998, CIMIT's core focus was in developing new technologies to advance minimally invasive surgery.

Aingeal: Low-Cost, Small, Wearable, Wireless Vital Signs Monitor

Supported by a CIMIT Innovation Grant within its Clinical Systems Innovation (CSI) Program, Aingeal is a low-cost, small, wearable, wireless device that monitors vital signs of patients, with an emphasis on respiratory rate, to reduce false alarms, allow for more virtual dissemination of alarms and simplify clinical workflow. CIMIT envisions this user driven innovative system to be in clinical use within 2 years (approximately 2014).

Label-Free Viral Detection for HIV CD4 Monitoring

Supported by a CIMIT Innovation Grant within its Biodetection & Sepsis Control Program, the Daktari CD4 is a portable CD4 cell counting system for HIV monitoring specifically designed for resource-poor markets and developing countries. The Daktari CD4 brings this essential blood test to parts of the world where millions of people now have access to life-saving drugs, yet cannot receive the best treatment due to inadequate diagnostics.
